{Synopsis} – Welcome to Fortune Falls, a magical town where superstitions are real. Four-leaf clovers really do bring good fortune, and owning a rabbit's foot is the secret to success.
However, there aren't enough charms in the universe to help Sadie Bleeker. She can't pass a ladder without walking under it, and black cats won't leave her alone.
That's because Sadie is an Unlucky. And things will only get worse as she gets older, which is why Unluckies are sent away at age twelve to protect those around them.
Sadie can't stand the thought of leaving home, so she and her friend, Cooper, devise a plan to reverse her bad luck. But when their scheme accidentally results in a broken mirror, the situation turns dire. Because for Sadie, seven years bad luck isn't an inconvenience-it's practically a death sentence.
Can a girl who's never so much as found a single lucky penny change her fortune? Or will she be forced to celebrate her twelfth birthday by saying farewell to everyone she loves?
{My thoughts} – Sadie appears to be one of the most unlucky individuals to live in fortune falls. Bad luck seems to attract to her like bees on honey. She has a little brother named Petey that appears to be one of the select lucky because he manages to avoid disasters in the nick of time.
Sadie on the other hand walks right into them without blinking. It isn’t her fault though. She does try to avoid them to the best of her ability given her unlucky state.
She attends a school where each child is categorized as undetermined until age 12. Once they turn 12 they take a luck test that will then categorize them as either lucky or unlucky. Depending on the categorization they get separated into different classes so that the two categories cannot mingle and cause bad luck to bestowed upon the lucky ones. The next year they will be forced to attend separate schools so that they have a better chance of staying safe.
Sadie had a few good things going for her even though she has bad luck. She is naturally smart and in some cases being smart can get your further in life then just being lucky. She has a really great friend named Cooper who cares a lot about her regardless her misfortune. And she had a father that believed in her, even though he had passed a year ago, she still has all the memories they shared.
The entire book builds up to her having to take the luck test after she turns 12. Does she survive to take the luck test? Does she figure out how to turn her luck around? Does she pass the luck test? There are even more questions you will encounter while your reading and each one will be answered.
I enjoyed this book as it’s a middle grade dystopia type read. I’m a huge fan of dystopia and I’ve been wanting to introduce my daughter to this genre but hadn’t found any I liked at her level if reading. I do think that she might enjoy reading it and look forward to sharing it with her.
If you enjoy mild dystopia type reads, I’m certain you will enjoy this book as well.
